Opening Ceremony
Skydivers dropped in, the Berkner Band performed, the teams marched in, the flame was lit and the games began. TI placed 3rd in the exhibition of Punt, Pass, and Kick. Then it was on to the relays for the Track and Field event (below). The highlight of the evening was the relay featuring 8 Special Olympians. The enormous crowd (with sadly only a few Tiers) was on their feet and cheering.
Track and Field (1st place - 10 points) Event Results
With two team members out of town, another two laid off just days before the game, and a no-show on Saturday it was a scramble to field a team. On Friday night, the 4x100 TI relay team was upset by Sprint. The 4x400 team came back with a decisive victory and we were up by 2 points. Saturday morning had strong performances from Aaron Hall (won 100m and long jump) and Benjamin Sarpong (3rd in 100m and 2nd in long jump) on the men's side and a 3rd place 100m and 2nd place LJ by Mariquita Gordon on the women's side to seal the victory. Beth Shockley took time bank Saturday to come score points in the long jump - that's the team spirit we need! TI was in 1st overall after one event.
Yardball (5th place - 3 points) Event Results
This new event is a fun one. Some of the pitchers could really make that wiffle ball curve. Russell McKelvain pulled together a solid team who tied for 5th place. I encourage more softball folks to get on the yardball list and tryout for next year's team.
Racquetball (1st place - 10 points) Event Results
4 of the 5 players from last year's team were out with various injuries. Fortunately, the newcomers stepped right in and took care of business. TI won the Men's (Errol Akomer and Steve Enty) and Mixed Titles (Eric Jubin and Sondra Scott) by going through the brackets undefeated. TI took 2nd place in the Women's (Sondra and Carla Spencer) to garner the overall event victory.
After the opening weekend TI leads the overall competition by a single point over Sprint.
Softball (3rd place - 6 points) Event Results
The softball team brought home the bronze medal just as they did in 2002.
5K (1st place - 10 points) Team Score Individual Results
Out of a field of 305 runners TI had the first three men finishers - Jim Dietz (17:06), Luke Luo (17:23), and Scott Steffen (17:23). These guys are all over 39 years old too. The team time is the sum of your top 3 men and top 3 women. Disaster almost struck when our top female missed the start of the race. Fortunately, our depth saved us. Beth Michalak (22:42) just decided to enter the race on Friday night for a fun run and was the 3rd overall female. Dianna Hager (22:45) and Margaret Faust (24:32) finished well to bring home the team gold. Several other TIers ran very well as we had 6 of the top 12 men. See the individual results link above.
After the second weekend TI leads the overall competition by 6 points over Nortel.
Horseshoes (2nd place - 8 points) Event Results
Our Women's and Mixed Teams both placed 5th and it was looking like we would loose some ground. Then the Men's Team (Bob Graham and Stephen Spriggs) came through in the clutch. Tied 19-19 on their final throw they nailed a ringer propelling them to the gold medal. That lifted the TI Horseshoes Team to the overall silver medal and valuable team points.
Miniature Golf (6th place - 2 points)
We couldn't find many TIers to take this event seriously. We struggled to even find people to play. Other teams sent their good golfers and we lost valuable ground. Nortel took the gold and the 10 points.
Basketball (1st place - 10 points) Event Results
Dan McKeon put together another solid team to sweep through the brackets and capture the gold medal again this year. The basketball team went 4-0 again and dominated the last two games to secure the victory.
Bike Race (1st place - 10 points) Team Score Individual Results
Nine riders finished at 23:44 with TIers Dirk Fruhling, Jason Cook, and Faulk Alicke in that pack. Nortel had two men in the pack so we were tied on time. Fortunately TIer Cari Ossenfort also finished in the lead pack with Martha Parks only 4 seconds behind. Once again our female riders made the difference to help capture the team title. Other great times were turned in by Dave Parks, Erica Peterson, Kathy Morse, Michelle Boyer, and Lara Wallentine.
With Tennis and Soccer delayed by rain, the TI Team moves out to a 12 point lead over Nortel with 9 of the 21 events complete.
Billiards (1st place) Event Results
We started slow with a 4th place finish in the Mixed. On the second night the Women (Michelle Boyer and Jen Smith) won the gold. In the final night the men (Tom Martin and Rob Hanes ) won the silver and we ended in a tie for the overall gold with Sprint.
Badminton (1st place) Event Results
Wow! What a performance. We swept all three events to capture the overall title. The Mixed Team (Adrian Chan and Vivian Zhu), Women's Team (Vivian Zhu & May Ann Choo), and Men's Team (Adrian Chan & Raj Talluri) were unbeatable.
Golf (6th place) Event Results
We improved one place from last year, but that only brought us to 6th. Golf and Mini Golf have been our two weak links this year.
Bowling (1st place) Event Results
The bowling team is going for most the most improved team award. They went from a 5th in 2002 to a decisive win in 2003. Led by Mike Sorrels' 211 average (3 games) and Ann Tran's 181 average the team rolled to a big victory.
With 13 of the 21 events complete we stretched our lead to 15 points (101 - 86) over Sprint . The gold in the badminton combined with our big improvement in bowling has put us in a good position to capture the overall title.
42 (Dominos) (2nd place) Event Results
We tied with Nortel for the Silver. Bob Graham and Richard Mach played right through to the final. Frank Schrah and Bob Tuerck made an earlier exit, but still contributed toward the team score.
Table Tennis (2nd place) Event Results
TI and Nortel battled it out all the way. Nortel won the Mixed and Women's and TI won the Men's (Mouli Vaidyanathan and George Fang). Nortel edged us for the overall Gold. Great job by the TI Team who improved from last year, came close to winning it all, and made some very nice donations to Special Olympics. Mixed Team of George Fang and Vivian Zhu. Women's Team of Vivian Zhu and Amanda Phan.
Volleyball (5th place ) Event Results
The volleyball team also improved from last year and ended up with a 5th place finish. Nortel was upset by Alliance and ended up with the Silver medal.
Tennis (2nd place) Event Results
The team improved from 5th place in 2002 to a 2nd place silver in 2003. The second round of matches were postponed by rain and we had to make some player substitutions, but all three teams did great. Brian and Stephanie Kincaid got us off to a good start, but had to miss the rescheduled dates. The teams played a marathon into the wee hours on Friday night to finish up. The Men (Ajay Patel & Josh Bates) won the Silver. The Mixed Team of John Sevier and Nancy Martin won the Silver. Nancy and Aline Sadate won the Bronze in the Women's. We took 2nd overall for 8 valuable points.
Soccer (1st place) Event Results Internal TI Soccer Team Page
The team won all 3 games in the group A pool and moved to the single elimination finals with a #1 seed. They moved through undefeated and didn't give up a goal the whole tournement. They defeated Nortel in an exciting title game. The game ended 0-0 and we won 7-6 on the penalty kicks. The soccer team ties the bowling team for the most improved award.
With 18 of the 21 events complete we hold a 16 point lead (138 - 122) over Nortel.
Darts (1st place) Event Results
Darts changed a few players from last year's gold medal team, but the outcome was the same. Our Women (Suzi Gagnon and Patricia Bohn) won gold on Monday night, the Men (Mark Smith and Joey York) took Bronze on Tuesday, and the Mixed (Suzi and Mark) won Gold on Wed to give us the overall Gold. Nortel ended in a 3 way tie for silver.
Swimming (1st place) Event Results
Derek McEachern took gold in the Men's 50M freestyle and backstoke along with a bronze in the breaststroke. Not to be outdone, Jennifer McEachern won gold in the Women's 50M freestyle and backstroke. In breaststroke Jay Greenwood grabbed the gold and Kristen Landry took the silver. Then the team of Sarah Liu, Derek McEachern, MJ Blasiak, and Jennifer McEachern won the 200m Freestyle Relay to cap off the team title.
Flag Football (4th place) Event Results
The pressure was off this year and the flag football team finished 4th and pushed us to a new RCC team total for points scored.
And the 2003 Overall Winner is . . .
TEXAS INSTRUMENTS. New RCC record for most gold medal teams (11) and most points (163). We won by 15 points (163-148) Overall Standings
Most importantly, the TI athletes donated over $2,600 to Special Olympics.
